Nee Nee, the first of three wheat pastes Swoon installed in New Haven, references the artist’s community-based project, Transformazium (2007-present), in which an artist collective remodeled a vacant church in Braddock, Pennsylvania into a community center for experiential learning and arts-based youth programming. Nee Nee, the portrait’s subject, was a young woman Swoon met while working in Braddock. The dreamlike cityscape Nee Nee’s likeness paints the is the town of Braddock—in the foreground of the image is the converted church that now serves as the Transformazium community center.
